Civil Engineering

ESL can deliver end-to-end civil engineering solutions for a range of infrastructure projects. Our design team is led by Chartered Civil Engineers with a wealth of rail sector experience.

As well as undertaking detailed design for a range of ‘standard’ line-side assets, ESL’s team have worked on a range of complex engineering problems. From complex load assessments on existing support structures to staging designs for assets that need to be constructed without disruption to the operational rail network.

We can draw on our industry knowledge and construction experience to derive designs that incorporate the safest and most efficient approaches to delivering a quality product in an often constrained environment.

The application of a value engineering approach to rail civils assets can have an enormous impact on the out-turn cost, as well as the environmental impact of the schemes. This could be due to the volume of assets being installed, even the smallest of improvements to standard designs can have a massive benefit through the reduction of materials and the cost and impact of installation.

Our designers are encouraged to think creatively about these challenges and to work closely with our construction teams to determine the best solutions available.

  • Structural civils including king post, gabion basket and ballast board retaining walls
  • High volume standard Overhead Line Electrification allocated foundations
  • Bespoke foundations for special load cases and applications
  • Short rigid piles and gravity bases
  • Modularised pre-cast foundations
  • Wall brackets
  • Fixings / attachments to existing structures (e.g. station canopies)
  • Compound works including fencing, walkways, lighting and drainage
  • Foundations for substations, HV switchgear and transformers
  • Cable containment, including troughing, ducting and Under Track Crossing
  • Bridge and retaining wall inspections
  • Intrusive testing of existing structures (retaining walls/viaducts etc.) including core drilling, endoscopic camera surveys and laser scanning
  • Topographical Surveys
  • Intrusive materials testing including core drilling and testing of masonry cores and paint testing
  • Reinforcement scanning
  • Exploratory trial holes to determine bridge deck construction
  • Trial holes for foundations to confirm ground type and presence of buried services
