Norwich Victoria Sidings

ESL acted as the specialist civil engineering subcontractor and carried out the design and build of the civil engineering works associated with the refurbishment of the sidings. These works included:

  • 500m of piled king post retaining wall up to 2.5m in height
  • A new drivers’ compound area including a car park, welfare building and various services
  • New secure fencing of the whole site, both traditional palisade and GRP
  • 1500m of combined TroTred walkway and cable route
  • Compound drainage, both surface and deep level including tie-ins
  • A new shunters’ area including walkways, cabin, foundations and hard standing
  • Signal foundations

The project suffered some early delays due to late sign off of GRIP 4 designs but we were able to overcome these and complete the installation on time for the deliver of the new trains to the satisfaction of Greater Anglia.

The ESL design and construction teams worked hand in hand, allowing more efficient construction solutions to be proposed and implemented by the designers reducing cost and programme for our client. We maintained a core design team throughout the project, supporting the operational team with quality assurance and being on hand to resolve technical difficulties as soon as they arose with engineering-led solutions.

Project Description

Abellio Greater Anglia identified the need to bring the disused Norwich Victoria Sidings back into operation to provide capacity for their new rolling stock. The sidings also required electrification to allow these new electric trains to be stabled.

As part of the refurbishment four new lines were built within the existing depot footprint along with a new car park and drivers’ compound, a new shunters’ area and associated ancillary works.
