ESL’s installation teams have constructed a broad range of civil engineering assets across the UK rail network. From large-scale retaining walls and earthworks to line-side assets such as substation compounds and foundations for line-side equipment cabinets.

We have a wealth of experience in successful delivery whilst working in an operational rail environment.

Our teams face a range of challenges, aside from the technical obstacles encountered during civil engineering installations. We recognise the importance of meticulous logistical planning and how it underpins the delivery of line of route works, even where the works themselves are comparatively straight forward. 

The staging of works, for example, the construction of under-track crossings (UTXs), lets us utilise short possessions and minimise disruption to the travelling public. This is achieved through the close collaboration between our design and installation teams and the client’s operational representatives.

Line-side Civils

• Equipment Bases — design and construction of a wide range of equipment cabinets for E&P and signalling equipment.
• Substation Compounds — survey, clearance, earthworks, retaining walls, foundations, compounds and access roads
• Overhead Line Electrification foundations — concrete side bearing, steel tubular piles, pre-cast and bespoke structure foundations
• Signal asset foundations — gantry and signal post foundations
• Structure fixings — structural supports to existing line-side assets such as retaining walls, bridges, station canopies and platforms   
• Route Works — design and installation of all types of containment works including
• ground troughing, elevated troughing, UTX / URX and cable installation.
• Earthworks — levelling, retaining works and embankment solutions
• Drainage — design and installation of new drainage and repair of existing systems
• Remedial Works — de-vegetation, scrap rail clearance and provision / installation of site protection fencing
• Platform Works — cable and associated route installation in challenging sites
