Blackpool Depot Design

North West Electrification Programme Phase 3

ESL developed the OLE design for the depot from close out of GRIP 3 to GRIP 5. Working closely with WSP, who were designers for other disciplines, ESL produced detailed design for OLE support structures, SPS, wiring, switching and bonding.

A detailed 3D model was produced and used to identify potential clashes with any existing or proposed infrastructure from other disciplines. Layout plans and cross sections were then generated directly from this 3D model to reduce potential for discrepancies between different design documents.

To enable construction works to commence ahead of the full AFC issue, the design was staged. Foundation allocations were released ahead of the main OLE design package and installed foundation positions fed back into the steelwork and wiring design.

A bespoke adapter plate was required for some incorrectly installed foundations. ESL produced a Form 002/003 design for this to enable the installed foundations to be utilised.

Project Description

As part of NWEP Phase 3 which electrified the route from Preston to Blackpool, Blackpool North Carriage Maintenance Depot was electrified. Other upgrade work was also undertaken to the depot at the same time including pway remodelling, carriage wash installation and extension of aprons.

Seven of the siding roads were electrified, with provision made for the remaining lines to be electrified in the future.
